I originally visited The Thistle because the Sopranos' cast loves their fish and chips. I had never tasted the English/Scottish icon before, and wasn't excited about eating fried fish. Boy, was I wrong. Jerry and Julie Leahy and their family have been serving up all kinds of seafood and chips for more than 30 years, and they say the secret is in the batter. That may be -- it's scrumptious -- but I thought the fish was fine, too. It's cod, and it's fresh and sweet and not even a bit greasy, as I had feared. If you prefer, you can order your seafood broiled. Either way, an order of fish and chips costs $11.25 and comes with excellent, creamy cole slaw. You can also choose shrimp or scallops or any combination, but save room for my personal favorite, a homemade Empire biscuit filled with raspberry jam. One of the Leahys' four children, William, has taken over the kitchen, and in the past few years, his take on food has had a serious impact on a landmark business. Today, lobster ravioli is the second-best seller, right behind fish and chips. Pasta is made fresh daily, and dinner specials of semolina-crusted halibut or peppercorn-seared scallops sell out fast. The menu isn't the only thing changing at The Thistle. William Leahy says he's busy redecorating, and his new ravioli company is doing well, selling wholesale to area businesses.
The best fried fish in NJ. The mixed fry (shrimp, scallops and fish) is the best! Meat pies! Meat pies and Irish/Scottish food and items to buy.

Not just Fish and Chips... Classically trained culinary chef Bill Leahy offers spectacular blackboard specials nightly that are 5 star quality at non-Manhattan prices. Bill and his family have been operating the Thistle for 45 years and it just keeps getting better. Municipal parking available in addition to street parking.
